It is not just outsiders Meta needs to convince. Even its own shareholders are starting to revolt. The company lost $13.7bn on its “reality labs” unit, which handles research into virtual reality and augmented reality tech, in the last year alone. In a December 2022 blogpost from the unit’s head, Andrew Bosworth, he predicted that a full fifth of the company’s expenditure this year would land with the unit.

But despite the years of investment, there is still only one real area where the underlying technology is actually paying off: video games.

Meta’s Quest 2 headset, a £400 standalone device, is the market leader, capable of handling some of the most popular VR games on the market, including the Meta-owned rhythm game Beat Saber, and VR exercise title Supernatural. Connect it to a powerful gaming PC and it can play even more, including the critically acclaimed Half-Life Alyx, a sequel to 2004’s Half-Life 2. (For non-gamers, imagine if Doctor Who had returned from its 1996 to 2005 hiatus in the form of a Sarah Jane Smith-focused spin-off series that was exclusive to 3D TVs. And then won a best drama Bafta.)

“Meta has done a huge amount of backpedalling about what it thinks is and is not the metaverse,” said Whatley. “I’ve seen Meta presentations that say augmented reality filters on Instagram count as the metaverse. But then I’ve also seen them say that we are all building the metaverse together. It’s quite telling that 100% of the top 38 bestselling experiences for the Quest 2 are all video games. The 39th is a ‘walk the plank’ experience.”

And in that world, Meta is hardly unchallenged. Half-Life Alyx was made for a rival PC platform, the £919 Valve Index, which serves the needs of diehard VR gamers with its “room scale” approach, while Sony’s £529 PlayStation VR2 offers a similar high-fidelity approach for console gamers with a PlayStation 5 in the living room.

And then there is the elephant in the room – and the reason why it may still be too early to fully write off Meta’s metaverse ambitions altogether. On 5 June, Apple is set to lift the lid on the worst kept secret in tech: its own virtual reality headset.

Piecing together leaks from the supply chain, reports from California and the groundwork the company has laid with developers, it is clear that the iPhone maker is planning to take a radically different approach from its rival, with a price tag in the thousands of dollars and a long-term goal to create a device that people do not feel the need to take off when they want to speak to people in the same room as them.

Like so much in the metaverse space, it is a vision that makes sense when you are planning for a decade’s time: with a refined version of these headsets that bundles the same technology in a pair of glasses, it could even be an appealing prospect to speak to the avatar of a work colleague floating in virtual space if the alternative is staring at yet another Zoom window.

But getting from here to there is going to be a hard and thankless slog – and even Zuckerberg cannot burn $10bn a year for ever.

He may have the weight of mounting legal woes on his shoulders, but Donald Trump appears to have slimmed down. The 76-year-old has looked noticeably more svelte in recent weeks despite facing at least nine lawsuits — including [sexual assault] allegations — and juggling a 2024 presidential campaign. Dr Stuart Fischer, a New York-based internal medicine specialist, told DailyMail.com the stress could be curbing Trump's appetite and making him move more — perhaps on the golf course.

Trump has been active on his Mar-a-Lago green amid his legal troubles and recently traveled to Scotland to oversee the opening of a golf course bearing his mother's name. Other experts have speculated that Mr Trump could have been prescribed obesity medications such as Wegovy or Ozempic. His primary rival heading into the Republican primary, Gov Ron DeSantis is rumored to have used to slim down too.

Dr Shauna Levy, an obesity expert at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana, told DailyMail.com: 'It is realistic to consider this possibility that he is on anti-obesity medication.' Former President Trump's final White House checkup in 2020 showed that he weighed 244 pounds at a height of 6 feet 3 inches. This puts his body mass index at 30.5, which is considered medically obese. Wegovy injections are meant for adults with a BMI of about 30 and up. Dr Levy said: 'I think given the fact of the availability and the success of the medicines, I think there is a high likelihood that somebody in this situation, regardless of who they are, may be taking anti-obesity medications. There's no way for me to know whether or not he's taking it just by looking at his face,' she added. 'But again, in the current climate where we have these wonderful anti-obesity medications, and somebody who has the means and the resources to take these medications and pay for them...'

Despite being a billionaire, Trump is known for his love of McDonald's. Dr Fischer told DailyMail.com that the likely cause of the weight loss is stress attached to his many legal woes 'and also the prospects of what's to come.' 'If he wants to run again for President, this is also going to take a tremendous physical and mental toll. It's an uphill struggle.He's got a lot to do physically. He likes to campaign. He likes to entertain. That's his persona.' Donald Trump’s health was often shrouded in mystery during his stint in office. He has repeatedly painted himself as a sort of Energizer Bunny with unlimited stamina, working late and sleeping fewer than five hours per night while trying to make it look easy. Still, he has not historically been forthright with his medical records. Rather than publicize them during his 2016 presidential run, Trump appeared on the daytime show Dr Oz, where he shared documents that purported to be his medical records.

Vladimir Putin is reportedly preparing a contingency plan in the event that Russia sustains more losses in the war against Ukraine, sources have said. Russia's presidential administration sent an instruction manual to the Kremlin's team of propagandists, urging not to 'underestimate' Ukraine's planned counter-offensive and not to spread the idea Kyiv is not ready for it. Ukraine's strategy is thought to focus on the eastern side of the Dnipro River, near Kherson city.

'Time-traveler' claims the alien invasion he predicted is complete

A'time-traveler' who warned of an alien abducting 8,000 people on March 23 has claimed that the extra terrestrial has come and gone from Earth, making its departure around 7.30pm EST.

The captured humans will allegedly protect us from the next alien invasion, which the space-aficionado claims is scheduled for 'mid 2024'.

TikToker Eno Alaric - who goes by theradiantimetraveller and claims to be from the year 2671 - stressed that yesterday would mark a tumultuous day in which 'The Champion' would bring its hostages to a habitable planet.

And in their most recent clip, the creator, who is understood to be based in the US, announced that the species had indeed made its arrival at 2pm and 'was looking for the best engineers, scientists, doctors and leaders'.

'The 8,000 have a long journey ahead of them,' Eno added. 'About four years, since The Champion can travel faster than light.'

A previous break-down of the abducted suggested it will include around 200 doctors, 1000 farmers, 1000 engineers and mechanics 'and many more'.

The video went on to claim that the hostages are 'what keep the human species alive, from inside and outside threats'.

However, it would seem it's not all good news.

'Mankind is a threat to itself in many ways,' Eno continued. 'Such as fighting, and causing the first nuclear winter.'

They also warned that yet another alien species - The Distants - is now on its way to Earth and will arrive sometime next year.

The TikToker explained that they 'own' Earth, and that the Pyramid of Giza is their 'mark of ownership and control'.

In a previous video, The Distants were branded 'very hostile' and on a mission to take back the planet that's originally theirs.

Apparently, humans became 'more advances than the aliens thought', as Eno claims we will soon be facing them in our firs space battle.

'I want you all to know that you are safe,' they reassured. 'I am trying to warn you all of what's to come.'

In another clip, the 'time-traveler' also predicted that this month would see 'The Lost City of Atlantis' threaten everyone with a 'man made flood, that can cover the entire world'.

Eno also alleges that on April 9, a very famous celebrity will reveal that they faked their death, and on June 12 - a earthquake will open a five-mile deep trench which will unveil species previously thought to be extinct.

The account posts more than 397,100 followers, with their videos raking up some 1.6 million likes.

The creator has previously made videos about twin planets with Earth, portals opening up to other dimensions, and alien visitors.
